The Nationals now have the worst news possible. Stephen Strasburg will apparently have to undergo Tommy John surgery. There are times in life when I hate, hate being right, and this is one of those times. I have said time and again that his arm would fall apart with his motion and overuse. I have said time and again that it would be a complete fall apart. I said that Strasburg will ever, ever be the pitcher the hype has made him out to be. His arm motion simply will NOT allow it. He will recover from this surgery physically. Mentally, he may never recover. And he may never again pitch like he did before the surgery. I still believe that his ultimate place will be a middle reliever – period. It will be all he can do. If he attempts to be a starting pitcher again, without fixing that arm motion, he will be ruined forever and never pitch again. Mark it down. However all hope is not lost for the Nats. Friday, Bryce Harper took batting practice at his introductory news conference in front of team management, players from the teams, and a huge crowd of media. Harper promptly placed a homerun in the third deck in right field. Harper belted 9 homers in his batting practice. Some of them were absolute monsters. In the last round of his BP, he hit homers on three straight pitches. Shades of Josh Hamilton started to cross one’s mind. Harper has the kind of power that can change games. The kind of power that can change entire seasons. He is out of the same mold as Josh Hamilton. And he may be the next great power outfielder. If things go even more wrong with Strasburg, Harper will be the Nats great hope. If his BP is any indication, he could be MLB’s next great superstar. And quite possibly one who can actually live up to the hype without tearing his body apart.
